Each Australian consumes an average of 27 kilograms of new clothing per year and disposes an average 23 kilograms of clothing to landfill each year, or 93 per cent of the textile waste we generate. To address this issue, this team of young innovators wants to create an app which allows the user to design a new piece of clothing using upcycled clothes that have been donated. This will give the clothing a new life and stop the cycle of fast fashion.
To trial this idea, Year 7s at Ballarat Grammar will be given the opportunity to create a piece of clothing from donated clothes that are no longer wanted, the new garments will then be shown in a fashion show which will showcase upcycled clothing and the importance of sustainable fashion.
