It is without question that climate change is increasing the severity and frequency of natural disasters across the world. We only have to look in our own backyard, with the Black Summer bushfires of 2019-20 and the floods of 2022 devastating great areas of Australia.
Thousands of homes were destroyed during both, and in an effort to protect them from future disasters, Bridie, Harmony, Tilly and Abbey have developed the idea of an artificial soil that is fire-resistant during bushfires and can hold moisture during times of drought, two natural disasters that continue to impact land and home owners across Australia.
To trial the idea, the team will collaborate with the Country Fire Authority (CFA) and the Victorian State Emergency Service (SES) to roll out an educational program which is co-designed by the services for local residents to help them protect their homes from natural disasters including fires, floods and droughts.
